01Use three response levels
An HVAC symptom should be classified by the safest action, not by how expensive it might be. The response can escalate as new information appears. If you are uncertain whether smoke, gas, carbon monoxide, or electrical arcing creates immediate danger, choose evacuation and emergency guidance over closer inspection.

Do not walk past smoke, sparks, a gas odor, a sounding CO alarm, or standing water near electricity to reach a thermostat or breaker. Evacuate instead.
02Leave the home and call from outside
- Carbon monoxide alarm: move everyone to fresh air, call 911 or the fire department, account for all occupants, and remain outside until emergency responders permit reentry. Do not search for the source.
- Possible CO illness: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, chest pain, confusion, fainting, or unusual sleepiness can be associated with carbon monoxide. Seek emergency medical attention and mention the suspected exposure.
- Suspected natural gas leak: a rotten-egg or sulfur-like odor, hissing, or other gas-leak sign requires leaving on foot. Do not use a phone, switch, garage-door opener, appliance, match, vehicle ignition, or other possible ignition source in the affected area. Call 911 and the gas utility when safely away.
- Smoke, flames, or sparking: activate the household fire plan, get out, stay out, and call 911. Do not attempt HVAC troubleshooting or return for belongings.
03Shut down at the thermostat only when it is safe
When there is no smoke, flame, gas odor, sounding CO alarm, wet electrical hazard, or need to evacuate, turning the system Off at the thermostat can stop a developing mechanical or comfort problem while you arrange service. Do not use Emergency Heat as a troubleshooting reset and do not repeatedly switch modes to force operation.

04Comfort loss can become an emergency for occupants
A failed system is not automatically a 911 event, but the indoor conditions it creates can become dangerous. During extreme heat or cold, prioritize people over equipment. Relocate residents who are medically vulnerable, very young, older, or unable to regulate body temperature to a safe conditioned place. Follow local weather and public-health guidance and seek urgent medical care for severe heat- or cold-related symptoms.
Tell the HVAC dispatcher if the home is losing temperature rapidly, pipes may freeze, or a resident relies on temperature control for health. That information can affect priority. Use only heating or cooling equipment that is approved for the location and follow its instructions; never bring a generator, charcoal grill, outdoor heater, or running vehicle into a home or garage.
05Actions that can turn a fault into an emergency
- Opening an electrical, furnace, air-handler, heat-pump, condenser, or refrigerant service panel.
- Resetting a breaker more than once or approaching a hot, buzzing, smoking, wet, or arcing panel.
- Relighting a burner, adjusting a gas valve, disconnecting a vent, or bypassing a flame, limit, pressure, float, or door safety control.
- Adding refrigerant, using leak sealer, pressing service valves, cutting a line, or assuming frost proves that the system only needs a recharge.
- Chipping ice, reaching near a fan, pressure-washing a coil, or operating equipment with guards or doors removed.
- Entering standing water near HVAC or electrical equipment, especially after a flood or condensate overflow.
A stopped system is usually safer and cheaper to diagnose than equipment that has been repeatedly forced to run through a protective shutdown.
06Make the emergency call useful
From a safe location, state the hazard first: CO alarm, gas odor, smoke, sparking, breaker activity, water near electricity, loss of heat in freezing weather, or a vulnerable person without cooling. Emergency dispatchers, the gas utility, HVAC companies, electricians, and plumbers handle different hazards; describing the condition helps route the call correctly.
For a non-evacuation service call, record the time, thermostat mode, setpoint, indoor and outdoor temperature, visible error code, sounds, odors, water, ice, filter date, and what happened immediately before shutdown. Do not reenergize the system for a video. After emergency responders clear the property, do not operate an appliance they identify as a possible source until trained personnel have inspected and serviced it.
