01First decide whether this is a comfort problem or a safety problem
A central air conditioner that is not cooling can be as simple as an unintended thermostat schedule or as serious as an electrical fault. Before troubleshooting, look and listen from a safe distance. If you see smoke or sparking, smell burning insulation, hear violent metal contact, or find water in contact with electrical equipment, move away and contact the appropriate emergency service or licensed professional. Do not reach through water, approach a hot electrical panel, or keep restarting the equipment.
Extreme indoor heat can also become a health emergency even when the equipment itself is not hazardous. Move infants, older adults, people with chronic medical conditions, and anyone showing confusion, fainting, or other heat-illness symptoms to a safely cooled location and seek medical help as appropriate. HVAC diagnosis can wait until people are safe.
If there is smoke, an active fire, or immediate danger, leave the home and call 911. Do not delay evacuation to switch off the thermostat or breaker.
02Name the symptom before you call
The phrase 'not cooling' covers several different failures. Record what the system is doing without opening a cabinet. This gives the service company a better starting point and helps it send the right technician and equipment.

03A safe five-minute homeowner check
- Set the thermostat to Cool, choose a temperature below the measured room temperature, and set the fan to Auto. Check for a hold, vacation mode, or schedule that is overriding the setpoint.
- If the thermostat screen is blank, replace user-serviceable batteries only if the thermostat manual calls for them. A blank hardwired control or recurring blank screen belongs to a technician.
- Check an externally accessible air filter. Replace a disposable filter with the exact approved size and airflow orientation, or clean a reusable filter according to its manual. If access requires removing an equipment panel, stop and call a professional.
- Make sure supply registers are open and return grilles are not covered by furniture, rugs, boxes, or heavy dust buildup. Do not insert tools into a grille or duct.
- From the ground and at a safe distance, check whether leaves, grass, trash, or snow are blocking outdoor airflow. Keep hands, hoses, and tools away from the fan, coil, wiring, and refrigerant lines.
- Allow the system one normal response interval after correcting a thermostat setting or accessible filter. If comfort does not begin improving, stop repeating adjustments and arrange diagnosis.
04What not to do when the AC is warm
- Do not open the air handler, furnace, condenser, disconnect, or electrical panel to look for a fault.
- Do not keep resetting a breaker. A second trip indicates a condition that needs diagnosis, and a hot, noisy, smoking, or arcing panel should not be approached.
- Do not add refrigerant, use a leak-sealing product, loosen service caps, or press a refrigerant valve. Federal requirements restrict refrigerant handling, and low charge normally means the leak and system operation must be evaluated.
- Do not chip, scrape, or heat ice on a coil or line. Ice can conceal delicate tubing, and forced thawing does not correct the cause.
- Do not spray an operating outdoor unit or use a pressure washer on its coil. Professional cleaning and electrical isolation may be required.
- Do not bypass a condensate switch, door switch, pressure switch, thermostat control, or other safety device to make the system run.
A running fan can make the home feel temporarily cooler while the refrigeration side is off. That does not confirm that the air conditioner is operating normally.

06When to schedule service and what to record

Request same-day guidance when the home cannot remain at a safe temperature or a medically vulnerable resident depends on cooling.
Before the appointment, note the indoor temperature, setpoint, outdoor temperature, thermostat mode, time the problem began, filter size and replacement date, rooms affected, sounds, odors, water, ice, and any error code visible without opening equipment. Photograph the thermostat and the equipment model label if both are safely accessible. Tell the dispatcher immediately about breaker activity, electrical odor, water near wiring, or vulnerable occupants.
